Statistics
There are more than 2.7 million LGBT adults ages 50 or older living in communities across the country, 1.1 million of them being ages 65 or older. Approximately 1 in every 5 queer elders is a person of color. This also highlights intersectionality and the oppression they may have gone through for not only being queer, but also a person of color. It's also important to note that one third of queer adults live 200% under the poverty line. This can provide a link that proves how queer people in general discriminated against and how they are often refused jobs. This can specifically corner trans individuals; approximately 51% of trans women have reported being refused a job for being transgender. This can also affect housing for a lot of individuals, where about half of same sex couples are refused housing entirely. In looking at same sex couples, especially for elders, it's crucial to note that they do not receive many benefits heterosexual couples receive for retirement, among them being: social security, pension, inheritance, spousal retirement benefit, death benefit, etc. (Understanding Issues Facing LGBTQ Older Adults).
